Sabon is a serif designed so that the same forms could be produced on both Linotype and Monotype machines. In the early 1960s the German Master Printers' Association requested such a typeface, wanting text and technical composition to match. Walter Cunz at Stempel responded by commissioning Jan Tschichold to design a new version of Claude Garamond's type. Linotype issues the family in roman, italic, bold, and bold italic.
