A practical guide

How to choose font pairings

A font pairing combines typefaces in one design. Start with clear roles, then compare the result on real websites. Use the examples below to find combinations for your next project.

How to pair fonts

Start with the content you need to display. Choose a role for each font, then test the pair in your layout.

  1. Choose clear roles

Choose a typeface for headings and one for body text. A heading can use a font with more detail. Check that your body font stays readable in a full paragraph at your intended size.

  2. Look for useful contrast

Try a serif with a sans serif. Or compare a display font with a plain text font. Use differences in size, weight, and style to make the heading and body roles clear. You can also use different weights from one family.

  3. Test real content

Test your own heading and paragraph on mobile and desktop. Compare letter shapes, numerals, spacing, and line height. Check that both fonts support the languages you need. Verify their licences before you use them in your project.

Font pairing questions

How many fonts should I use?

Start with two typefaces. You can also use one family with different weights. Add another font only when it has a clear role, such as a short label or code sample.

Are these fonts free to use?

Each font has its own licence. Open its font page and check the foundry or provider before you use it in your project. For a starting point, compare the Google Fonts guide.

What does “popular” mean here?

Pairs are ordered by the number of curated websites where both fonts appear. Each website counts once per pair. This measures use in MaxiBestOf's collection. It does not measure use across the whole web.

Which font should I use for headings?

Open a website example to inspect how its fonts are used. A shared website record shows that the fonts appear together. It does not specify their heading and body roles. Test both roles with your own content before you choose.
