Gotham Font

Gotham is a sans serif inspired by the no-nonsense lettering of the American vernacular—paint, plaster, neon, glass, and steel in the urban landscape. It follows New York’s handmade sans serifs, an engineer’s idea of basic lettering found on bronze doorway numbers, cornerstones, neon signs, and delivery trucks. Those letters went unrevived until Tobias Frere-Jones and Jesse Ragan introduced Gotham at Hoefler&Co. in 2000; the design feels familiar, assertive but never imposing, friendly but never folksy, confident but never aloof. A lowercase, italics, and widths including Narrow, Extra Narrow, and Condensed add sophistication while keeping the family’s plainspoken character.
