Charter Font

Charter is a serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter for Bitstream in 1987 as a body-text face meant to hold up well on the low-resolution output of fax machines and 300 dpi laser printers. Those qualities also serve it on computer screens, which typically operate well below 300 dpi. In 1992 Bitstream contributed PostScript versions of the basic family to the X Consortium, making those outlines freely available for use and modification. A commercial OpenType family is still offered by Bitstream, and Charter later became the basis of the expanded free typeface Charis.
