Universal Sans Font

by Family Type

Universal Sans is a customisable variable typeface system designed by Briton Smith for Family Type. Released in 2020, it addresses the high cost and long lead times of custom type by making production instantaneous and more widely available. Six variable axes and an extensive set of stylistic alternates generate an infinite number of unique sans serifs that still follow fundamental typographic principles. The design connects related yet diverse sans serif styles, drawing on pioneering twentieth-century typefaces with a similar intent while adding features enabled by current technology. Users name their typeface and can download a trial or licence it commercially.
